As if 2023 wasn't bad enough for Road Racing in the Republic, 2024 has equally been gloomy for many other reasons other than Insurance. A number of Road Race Clubs have regrettably been pushed to a place they never envisaged, and have taken matters and the sport into their own hands. The upshot from late 2023, is that our sport has been placed into a hiatus not by the Clubs, but sadly by the lack of insurance for the sport, and several governance issues that have impacted on our heritage, our clubs and our future. The fact that our sport has no guarantees from Motorcycling Ireland, and a level of derision that has demeaned the sport, the clubs and riders to breaking point. This is not about finger pointing or belittling the work that Motorcycling Ireland has done in getting motorcycle sport back on our tracks, but there has been a leadership shift away from the most minimum of expectations from our sport, namely our value, and sporting worth to the Organisation, beyond the obvious monetary value our sport brings to Motorcycling Ireland. In order for our sport to remain relevant, we have to take ownership of it, not just for a few, but for all who have enjoyed and contributed to the sport for generations.
